Surviving the winter: Think like a kid

As any kid will tell you, adults are stupid. Adults worry about things that don't matter, we care about things that are not relevant and we put out too much effort in such endeavors as cleaning the house when it'll just get dirty and making the bed when the bed will just be unmade again in a few hours. Kids understand it's important to save energy for killing zombies. I see you there, shaking your head and wagging your finger, but they may be onto something. In fact, they may hold the key to surviving climate change. Here is the kid's survival plan to keep you safe, in good weather and bad. Shelter in place When the temperature dips below freezing, it's best to curl up in the basement and play video games or try to find the real meaning of life from watching Green Day on the You Tube channel. Stock up Make sure your cave is fully equipped with supplies designed to give you energy including Skittles, Doritos and a full case of Red Bull which wil...

SkyZone: No more monkeys jumping on the bed

Scott and I pass this place every day on the way to the Conroy Pit Dog Park. This would be a fantastic place to take your kids for a birthday party or in place of going to the movies. Get them away from the video games. Take those Skittles out of their hands. Burn off some energy. It's only $9 a person for a half hour! Sky Zone is located at the corner of Walkley and Conroy. You're welcome.

Up with toddlers

The ritual family gathering wouldn't be complete without something horrible happening. Like a toddler falling down the stairs. It's been years since we've had a little one running around and they are easily misplaced. One minute they're in the corner, the next, they have their hands in the dog dish and the very next they're taking a header down the stairs. That's what happened at our Father's Day celebration yesterday. The baby Skylar must have gotten into her mama's Red Bull, for she certainly had wings. I've tried hard to babyproof our house, but there's always something that's missed. Like the plants placed lovingly on a teetery table just waiting to be pulled down. Or an errant cellphone or remote just waiting for sticky hands. Of course, there is also the perfect canine storm: Sophie the pug, just the right size to push down a two foot todder; Finnigan the extra-large labrador with an everready tail to launch her into space; a...

Happy Firecracker Day!

My neighbor Squeaky always looked forward to Queen Victoria Day. It was the day he got to blow up frogs. And blow them up real good. Squeaky and I would go down to the pond on Cole's Farm and catch frogs by the pail. I was never up for blowing up frogs; I preferred burning down the Little Red School House. Nobody got hurt and we school kids delighted at the fact we could commit symbolic arson at least one day of the year. We didn't have money for the big fireworks, but it didn't matter. Squeaky's dad Art, the rich gladiola baron always put on a show just down the road. On our farm, we'd sit in rickey lawn chairs and eat hot dogs and popsicles while Squeaky's clan had steak and pie. It was always seemed to me a little unfair, the class difference. It just reinforced the great divide between poor farmers and rich farmers. Oh well, we could live vicariously through Art's brood. I was thinking today about how special life was when we were kids. How th...
